The Kingdom of Belgium gets its name from Belgae. The Belgae were the
first known inhabitants of the land, probably Celts. The land was conquered
and ruled by various groups such as Julius Caesar, the Franks, Burgundy,
Spain, Austria, and France for 1800 years. In 1815 it became part of the
Netherlands, but later gained its independence in 1830 under a constitutional
monarchy.
Belgium was invaded and occupied by Germany in World War I and II. During
World War II, in 1940 King Leopold III surrendered to Germany. After the
war, his people forced Leopold III to give up his crown to his son, whom
they thought would be a better leader.
The Flemings live in northern Belgium and speak Dutch while French is
spoken in the south by the Walloons. This language and racial difference
causes controversy and antagonism.
Belgium is dependent on trade - it exports about half of its entire production.
